Sexual harassment in healthcare and the GMC’s updated ‘Good Medical Practice’.

The GMC has recently (22 August 2023) published its updated ‘principles, values and standards’ for doctors in which ‘Sexual harassment of colleagues is covered explicitly for the first time’.

The updated document says doctors: ‘must not act in a sexual way towards colleagues with the effect or purpose of causing offence, embarrassment, humiliation or distress’.

“…acting ‘in a sexual way’ can include – but isn’t limited to – verbal or written comments, displaying or sharing images, as well as unwelcome physical contact. You must follow [the GMC’s] more detailed guidance on Maintaining personal and professional boundaries”.

The document sets out for the first time (at paragraph 58) what doctors should do if they observe bullying or harassment.

A copy of the announcement and a link to the updated version of “Good Medical Practice” can be found here: Sexual harassment in healthcare must stop – GMC (gmc-uk.org) It comes into effect on 30 January 2024.
